Terland earns United derby draw as City lose top spot in WSL

Manchester City lost their perfect WSL record and top spot after Elisabeth Terland secured a 1-1 draw for Manchester United at Leigh on Sunday 25 October.

United moved up to fourth. Defending champions City slipped to second, behind Chelsea on goal difference after Chelsea beat Crystal Palace 3-1.

Khadija “Bunny” Shaw had put City ahead in the second half. Her low finish was her 91st WSL goal in her 100th appearance in the competition.

But United levelled late after a short free-kick. Maya Le Tissier sent the ball into the penalty area, where Shaw’s defensive header fell to Terland. The United forward struck first time into the bottom corner.

United turn chances into a point

City threatened before the break through Aoba Fujino, who shot narrowly wide. United also created openings, with Ella Toone and Jess Park forcing saves from Ayaka Yamashita.

Yamashita then denied Terland one-on-one before Park clipped the crossbar around the hour mark. After Shaw’s opener, City had opportunities to extend their lead: Shaw sent a close-range effort over and headed wide, while Grace Clinton missed a chance to settle the match.

The result followed two 3-0 defeats for United in last season’s league derbies. United head coach Eva Olid said her team had “deserved to win”. Her tenure had begun with defeats by London City and Chelsea.

City head coach Andrée Jeglertz remained confident after the draw, saying: “Nothing has changed. We are absolutely on the right track, in everything we are doing.”
