Asda’s Longsight and Shaw stores are among eight branches set to recruit apprentices under a new programme offering 16 permanent jobs.

As of Thursday 22 October, the retailer’s plans include an initial intake of 16 young adults, followed by a further 250 recruits in 2027.

Who the programme is for

The scheme is aimed at 18 to 21-year-olds who are outside employment, education and training. Apprentices will have paid, permanent roles alongside structured workplace learning.

They will study towards a nationally recognised Level 2 qualification, equivalent to five GCSEs. Training and mentoring will form part of the programme.

The two Greater Manchester branches taking part are Longsight and Shaw, in Oldham. Other participating stores are across Yorkshire, Lancashire, Merseyside and the West Midlands.

The programme, called ‘Asda Roots’, has been developed with the Department for Work and Pensions and Inspiro Learning. It is being introduced through the Government’s Foundation Apprenticeship programme.

Asda’s chief people officer, James Goodman, said the scheme aims to address barriers facing young people who have not had opportunities to build the skills and experience employers seek.
