Points failure blocks all Manchester Airport rail lines and diverts Crewe trains
All lines at Manchester Airport were blocked by a points failure, with Crewe services diverted and ticket flexibility for cancelled trains.
A points failure blocked all railway lines at Manchester Airport on Tuesday 3 November, causing cancellations, delays and diversions.
Northern said passengers booked on cancelled trains could use any Northern or TransPennine Express service departing up to two hours either side of their original departure time.
Three services between Crewe and Manchester Piccadilly were affected. The 10.16am departure from Crewe, scheduled to reach Piccadilly at 11.28am, was rerouted between Styal and Heald Green. It missed the airport stop and suffered a delay.
In the opposite direction, the 10.36am Piccadilly departure, scheduled to reach Crewe at 11.39am, took a diversion between Heald Green and Styal. It also bypassed the airport and was running around nine minutes late.
The 11.36am train from Piccadilly, scheduled to arrive in Crewe at 12.39pm, was also set to miss the airport. Northern said the fault would delay its departure from Piccadilly.
The operator apologised for the disruption. Passengers were advised to consult journey planners or station screens, or ask railway staff, before setting off.
